Coral reef succession
Target Group: Secondary School
Subject: Coral Reef Life
Ocean Literacy Principle: 4,5,6
Students compare a disturbed and an undisturbed coral reef with each other and decide whether these ecosystems are still sustainable.
Students learn more about ecological succession and how the concepts shifting baseline, disturbance (both natural and caused by humans) and sustainability are all interconnected. Students discuss how an ecosystem can change by disturbances. They note the different disturbances that occur on two different coral reefs while watching a video. All resources can be found on the website (click on Reference Material).
Computer, projector, download movies from the website (see Reference Material), copy the worksheet on the blackboard instead of printing it for each student.
