Building a watershed-Experiment
Target Group: Primary School
Ocean Literacy Principle: 2,4,6
Students build a model of their own watershed in small groups. They predict how they can prevent marine debris entering the ocean.
Students build a watershed in a big plastic container, using sand to model land with mountains. By adding water (rain) on the land, they get an idea of how the water enters the ocean through different waterways. They add 'marine debris' in their model where people live and see what happens with it while it is raining. Students discuss what they can do to prevent marine debris entering the ocean. The activity can be found on page 12 of the Educator's Guide.
Sand, soil, gravel, water, big container (1 per group), permanent markers, spray bottles (1 per group), bottles, computer, projector.
