Away is not away anymore-Marine Debris
Target Group: Middle School
Subject: Plastics & Trash
Ocean Literacy Principle: 6
Students discuss where their garbage ends up, which is either a landfill, the ocean or the product is recycled and used again.
They discuss the (dis)advantages of garbage ending up on a landfill after watching a movie. The other option is recycling of garbage, which is often downcycling. As an example of downcycling, students create their own recycled paper. Students discuss how a plastic bag can end up in the ocean.
Blender, used paper scraps, water, screen, computer, projector, A3 print of plastic table or several copies on normal format.
You will have to download three movies from YouTube, about landfills (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zR2eqZIu40M link), how recycling works (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b7GMpjx2jDQ link) and how a plastic bag travels to the ocean (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GLgh9h2ePYw link). Alternatively you can prepare a powerpoint with pictures.
