Target Group: Primary School
Ocean Literacy Principle: 1,4,5,6
Students do an experiment to compare healthy shells and shells that have been affected by acidification.
They start with brainstorming which animals with shells live in the ocean. Students observe different shells and make two groups of shells: healthy shells and shells affected by acidification. They try to break a shell from each group by putting as much weight weight on top of the shell until one breaks. Students discuss the results. The activity can be found on page 5 of the Educator's guide.
Thin shells (you can ask your students to collect a few shells), vinegar, water, heavy books or rocks, containers.
