How to catch a fish-Sustainable fishing game
Target Group: Middle School
Ocean Literacy Principle: 5,6
Students carry out a fish experiment in which they use different fishing nets. The mesh size of the net influences the amount of bycatch.
Students see in an experiment how the mesh size of a fishing net influences the amount of bycatch. Different dried food represent different animals. Students calculate the average fish catch and think about the (negative) consequences of fishing for the environment.
Different kind of dried food pasta, (monggo) beans, rice, cup, small 'fishing nets' with different mesh sizes (mosquito net, real fishing net).
Instead of providing each group with all the ingredients the experiment can also be done in a demonstration with the whole class where multiple pairs of students have a net with a different mesh size.
