Target Group: Middle School
Subject: Plastics & Trash
Ocean Literacy Principle: 1,6
Trash game in which each group has to clean up their area by throwing the trash over a tarp to the other group. In each round different strategies for cleaning are used.
Part of the garbage that we throw away comes back to us as marine debris. This garbage ends up in great garbage patches in the ocean. Students think about how to reduce waste, since there is no 'throwing away'. The game shows that new garbage appears, even when you remove your old garbage.
Tarp, marine debris, computer, projector, stopwatch (on phone). You can collect the (marine) debris with the students during a beach or school clean-up or ask them to pick up thrash when they walk to school.
